A Mostly British Obsession

Draw an XK-140

I enjoy how-to videos like this, even if I don’t have the skills to actually “how-to,” in this case. (The subject seems appropriate, though.)

To me, videos like this are a bit like the old joke about how to carve a horse from a solid block of marble: Just remove everything that doesn’t look like a horse.

2008 Vancouver All British Field Meet

Alvis Speed 20

Here’s a slide show (click “more” to see it) of machines spotted at the Vancouver All British Field Meet on May 17, 2008. It was a beautiful day but I stupidly forgot sunscreen and got severely burned as a result. It was a nice show in a great setting. I got rid of all of my Canadian money, too, before coming back, a real achievement for me.

Jaguar Mk. V

Jaguar Mark V

Of all the Jaguar sedans I wouldn’t mind owning, this, the Mark V, is at the top of the heap. It’s a supremely elegant car. I had an opportunity to buy one a few years back but just couldn’t pull the deal together in time. Maybe at some future date I’ll have the chance again. This machine was seen at the 2007 Vancouver BC All British show.

Romulus

ERA "Romulus"

This is the important ERA (English Racing Automobile), “Romulus,” as seen at the Bellevue All British Field Meet in 2007. The car is owned by Greg Whitten–who I occasionally saw around campus when I was contracting at Microsoft back in the early 90’s–that’s as close as I get to fame and fortune, which is good enough for me. He was very gracious at the show, going so far as to let my friend Jeff pose in the car (as seen above, I think the photo was even taken by Mr. Whitten).

Early December

Not much going on. Reg the MGB and the bikes are away for the winter, and not much else is new with any of my other derelict machines. But, hey: This Mike Hawthorn tribute site is actually nicely done. Mike drove a Mk. I. I shared video of him at Le Mans a few months back. So. Enjoy!

Jaguar, New S-Type

The “modern” S-Type has grown on me a bit, though it is best in “quiet” colors. I imagine it’s a nice machine to drive, especially with the optional V8. Winding Road has an article up on the next generation, which, if it looks like the artist’s conception below, should be a nice machine indeed.
